Formative blog feedback - Miss Hunter

James, your blog is behind where it should be at this stage of the year. You need to take urgent steps to catch up.

Your next steps should be:
  • Create the cover and contents page of your school magazine.
  • Analyse the language used in one magazine and how it is adapted to a target audience.
  • Complete a case study of a magazine of your choice - front cover analysis, contents page analysis, double page spread analysis, colour (throughout the magazine) analysis.

Editor's Letter Analysis

In this editor's letter, they use a specific style of language in order to appeal to its target audience. This magazine's target audience is older people ages between about 35-45. Due to this, the editor writes formally so that it's more appealing to its target audience whereas if they were writing for a younger audience, they might use slang words or swear words so it's more relate able for they audience and how they are likely to speak in everyday conversation. The opening of the letter says "Welcome to the new issue." So it makes the reader comfortable and settles them into reading the magazine. This opening is appealing to the target audience because it's formal and welcoming, if the magazine was to be for a younger audience they might use a more explicit opening and maybe refer to the readers with a certain term only they would understand. As they magazine is for an older audience the opening is written as such so the reader is more likely to want to read on as they are reading how they might speak. The picture of the editor is in black and white so it presents the editor as a formal and classy person which will make the target audience like the editor. If they like they editor it is likely they will read and enjoy the magazine as the editor sets the general tone of the magazine with their letter to the audience, so it is important that the editor presents themselves in such a way as to make the audience like them. The way the letter is structured is important as well, if it is presented without paragraphs it is less likely to appeal to the magazines target audience as it would be seen as informal. That is why the structure is important as, the editor's letter needs to appeal to its target audience, if this magazine was for younger people the structure would be more messy in order to appeal to its target audience. Since this magazine is for older people the structure has to be neat and formal.
